Spring Class schedule 2006
2 Day Sock Workshop Toe Up Socks On One
Circular Needle, Including 2 At Once
Date: May 20 and 21, 2006 10-4pm
Instructor: Janet Rehfeldt
Knitters are discovering that
knitting socks on one long circular needle can be easier than juggling
three and four double pointed needles. Even if you have never knit a pair
of socks before, you can learn to knit socks using one long circular needle
working from the toe up.
Knitting socks from the toe
up allows you to fit as you knit, easily trying on the socks as you work
as well as not having to graft toes or heels. Using one long circular
needle makes knitting 2 socks at one time quick and easy.
Workshop covers casting on in both figure eight and closed toe cast on;
several methods of increasing the toe and heel shaping methods; binding
off and working 2 socks at one time for great looking fit as you knit
socks.
Class project: Knitting a small
sock from the toe up on one long circular needle; Work on 2 socks at one
time.
Skills Required: Students must know how to cast on, knit, purl and bind
off. Experience knitting in the round is helpful.

Bobbin Lace
Instructor Hazel Carter
Bobbin Lace is made with threads
wound on to bobbins, using a card pattern called a pricking. The pricking
and bobbins are supported by a pillow of various shapes according to a
kind of lace being made. Despite the apparent complexity of the results
, the technique is quite simple, being founded on two basic movements
of the bobbins. The type of lace taught is principally tochon, branching
out late into plaited (braid) lace and russion tape lace - popular nowadays
for making holiday and other decorations. Bring three-ring binder for
hand-outs; all other supplier available at the shop.
Material Fee $45.

Tatting
Shuttle tatting is said to
be derived from the thread knotting of
the 18th century. It consists of rings and 'chains' made of a double stitch
or knot with a carrying thread, the knots being 'turned' so that they
can run along the carrying thread. Tatting was popular in Victorian times,
and has recently, like many crafts, enjoyed a revival. Modern developments
in techniques and threads have widened the type of designs produced, which
include festive decorations, jewelry, pictures, collars, cuffs and bridal
head-dresses, in addition to the more familiar edgings, mats, doylies
and bookmarks.
Taught by Hazel Carter. Fee
$45 plus Materials.

Felted purse class
Felting a purse (and one from
an award winning design yet) can be a refreshing short-term project, yielding
something wonderful, unique and useful in a day. This is my adaptation
of felter Beth Beede's "hat on a ball", and as such can be done
in the space of the kitchen sink and a spot of the counter top next to
it. The papier mache' technique allows for a great deal of control in
the placement of color and design; theuse of a resist allows us to felt
in the pockets.
The session will begin with
a brief description of what and why felt
is, and include examples of felt from various breeds of wool. Simple sampling
methods of felting will be shown. After the paper mache 'technique is
described, participants will pick out the wool color batts they choose
to use.
Everyone will complete a purse
and take it home to dry, and to enjoy forever!
